Although the slighlty left of centre Prodi Government has withdrawn troops from Iraq, Italy still has troops in Afghanistan supporting the US occupation of that country.
Tens of thousands of people protested his presence in the streets with the main march behind a banner saying ''No Bush, no war,'' Organisers estimated 150,000 people attended the anti-war march on Saturday.
There were also thousands of caribineri in attendance, and there was some street fighting, mostly seperate from the large demonstration.
