secret agenda : international nuclear waste
by just1n b. Monday June 04, 2007 at 03:36 PM

a proposed NT site was always going to grow into a dumping ground for the world's unwanted high level nuclear wastes. The only people claiming otherwise are the same lying politicians who promised we'd never get the dump in the first place.

Back in 1997, the federal government tried to impose a low level radioactive waste dump on a vulnerable, impoverished, disempowered remote aboriginal community in south australia. When the kungkas fought back, environmentalists quickly joined their cause. They pointed out that, if the feds were able to establish the low level dump, they'd effortlessly co-locate a much more worrying load – long-lived nuclear wastes from the lucas heights reactor program.

Now, the federal government is going all out to impose that nuclear waste on a vulnerable, impoverished, disempowered remote aboriginal community in our Territory. Despite enthusiastic support from the NLC, some traditional owners remain staunch in their opposition to this drive. Last weekend's liberal party national conference revealed that this government hopes to effortlessly transform the NT dump into a site for international nuclear waste.

Just as the SA low level facility was always going to turn into a long-lived nuclear dump, the proposed NT site was always going to grow into a dumping ground for the world's unwanted high level nuclear wastes. The only people claiming otherwise are the same lying politicians who promised we'd never get the dump in the first place.

Coalition accused of having 'secret agenda' for nuke dump

The Labor Member for Lingiari has warned the Northern Territory could receive high level nuclear waste from around the world if the Federal Government is re-elected.

The Liberal Party National Conference passed a motion on the weekend urging the Commonwealth to consider setting up an international waste dump in Australia.

Warren Snowdon says the recent announcement of Muckaty Station near Tennant Creek as a likely low and intermediate level dump, sets the Territory up to receive higher level nuclear material from overseas.

"It's very clear that there's a secret agenda that which has been at the back of the mind of the Liberal Party for some time," he said.

"I've got no doubt in my mind at all that this is just another example of the mean and tricky nature and dishonest nature of the way in which John Howard and the Liberal Party are dealing with people of the Northern Territory."

no secret

That slime bucket Bob Hawke announced as much some time back.

He was always a good lackey and Zionist to boot.

The only secret agenda is the myth that aussies are brave and fearless ANZAC heroes -- what a fuckin joke -- took a while to realise what a bunch a cowardly shits we really are and there's no avoiding it now -- 11 years of Johnny proves it.

and the world laughs on (at Australia's expense)

Nuclear waste backflip fear

THE Federal Government denied last night that high-level nuclear waste from overseas would be stored in the Territory.

But critics said Canberra backflipped on similar promises to never build a domestic nuclear waste facility in the NT.

The Liberal Party Federal Council passed a motion on the weekend urging the Government to build a "worldwide nuclear waste storage in the geotechnically stable and remote areas that Australia has to offer".

Federal Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane said it was against the law for Australia "to take anyone else's nuclear waste" and the Government had no intention of changing the law.

But Lingiari MHR Warren Snowdon said he has "no doubt if the Howard Government is re-elected, we'll see a high-level nuclear waste dump in the Northern Territory."

He said Territory Senator Nigel Scullion promised not to allow a domestic nuclear waste dump "on his watch" before the last election, but refused to vote against the legislation.

"They'll say one thing before an election, and do another after," he said.

Mr Snowdon said it was clear the Liberal Party had a "secret agenda" to set up a high-level waste facility in the Territory - and the proposed low-level facility at Muckaty Station is "largely a side-show".

Arid Lands Environment Centre campaigner Natalie Wasley said the Government had little credibility when making these promises.

She said the proposed domestic nuclear facility at Muckaty Station, could be upgraded to accept international waste.

"If the Commonwealth couldn't convince the states to take on the low-level nuclear waste dumps, then they definitely won't be willing to take international waste," she said.

"They will have to force it on the Territory as well."

The Commonwealth nominated three sites in the NT for the domestic waste facility after the states refused to have it built on their land.

The Northern Land Council volunteered Muckaty Station for low and intermediate level waste last month.
