G8 Protest and the Women of the Banlieues

Women in Protest...

In a few day the G8 will meet in Berlin. There will be massive protests as people try and change the consumtion orientated direction that is controlling the lives of so many millions of people. In a recent article on the resistance in the banlieues of France to global capital it stated that women played a large role in the actions of resistance to police and racist policies: "Some groups of women, and I can guarantee this because I organised some of them, settled our accounts with our bosses and guardians while the battle was going on in the streets. When it was impossible to attack the warehouses, we went for their cars and homes. Some caïds met with accidents. This should give at least a bit of a different picture of the revolt and of the role women played in it, which was in no way subordinate or even invisible. But this is not what seems to me to need emphasising most. It seems more important to speak of the silence which there has been on this, starting from the left parties and movements." In Grassroots Political Militants: Banlieusards and Politics Tonight on an educational chat show on Swedish TV an academic spoke of women needing to take their place in “hunting and fishing” and other areas of traditionally male recreation for equality to be extended. Women need to lead the way in changing the system that would see one hundred bears, tens of thousands of elk, and dozens of wolves shot and millions of trees felled in Sweden each year. Women should not be trying to follow in the last 2000 years of men's ecological, social, political and cultural failures. They should be leading the way in building a new system that we, of whatever gender, can live together in. Our future depends on it. Here is a slide show of Women in Riot. Just do it!!
