Sunday political talkies: Clean fight in ALP? Coalition pitch for women's vote as contrast
by ecology action Tom McLoughlin

Sydney
The govt is pitching for the women's vote as the bruvvers at the ALP sort out their last run to the election. Gilliard/Plybersek etc will need to increase their profile as will others to regain that vote after this week?
[This is a regular post on Sydney IMC but offline for maintenance at this time, so trespassing on Melb IMC this week. However ]
Author’s note: This is not a well packaged story. It’s a contemporaneous traverse of the Sunday free to air political talkies indicating the agenda of Establishment interests. Better to know your rivals I say in Big Politics and Big Media.
Indeed it’s the tv version monitoring task similar to what Nelson Mandela refers to here in his book Long Walk to Freedom (1994, Abacus) written in Robben Island prison (where he was meant to die like other African resister chiefs of history in the 19C), at page 208
“..newspapers are only a shadow of reality; their information is important to a freedom fighter not because it reveals the truth, but because it discloses the biases and perceptions of both those who produce the paper and those who read it.”
Just substitute ‘Sunday tv political talkie shows’ for newsprint in the quote. For actual transcripts go to web sites quoted below except with Riley Diary on 7 which is at 8.35 am roughly. And note transcripts don’t really give you the image content value.

10 Meet the Press. 8-8.30 am
Health Minister Abbott looking fit but also mad. Alison Carabone 2UE, Peter Hartcher SMH – both smarties, heavy talent too.
All about leadership of ALP. Echoes major Sundays in Sydney ‘pollies behaving badly. [Actually its good healthy democracy but the Establishment won’t spin like that. ]
Plays moral high ground but trashes that with gratuitous comparisons Rudd is ‘Beazley lite’ when clearly former is much better public speaker. Rudd married 25 years. Asian language speaker. Says Latham at least ran a council, Rudd only pollie’s office (Wayne Goss) which is bullshit given it was Premier of Qld office.
Mangles comparison with Helen Clark re ‘single woman’ Gilliard, Clark as PM of NZ of course being long time married but subject to nasty attacks by the Nationals over there via Exclusive Brethren about philandering or gay husband. The kind of gutter dirt tactics Abbott would be proud of given his nurturing of such grubs as David Oldfield who went on to coordinate One Nation for Pauline Hanson for quite a while there.
Fact is Abbott is a grub like Howard. Says Howard will go his full term which is ‘his style’ but trashes this claim by admitting Rudd would get a honeymoon, so obviously opportunistic.
Indeed Abbott is fronting for Howard with footage of Gaurdicil new cervical cancer vaccine, as a controlled timing ‘look and me, look at me’ to contrast with ALP ‘travails’ to quote Carabone.
[It’s all choreography folks by Howard/|Abbott team, and to snow people about the incredible repudiation of Howard by the Governor General Michael Jeffery in the Weekend Australian yesterday.]
Show after first ad break goes to actual health/PBS policy. Very good politics for the government for the women’s vote, to contrast blokey ‘ugly’ culture of factional fight amongst the ALP bruvvers. This is the political gambit for which Julia Gilliard higher public profile and sisterhood solidarity is the antidote likely for the ALP and for all other parties too.
Rubbery figures via The Australian and Nicholson cartoonist is very cruel and funny intro to Beazley, who is there next guest about verbosity and indeed what that reveals about public speaking and leadership/decisiveness.
Rudd footage – he’s been on a diet too, and fitness regime. Looking very groomed.
KB in the chair. Learned to use “competitive”instead of contestable which is obscure stupid word choice. KB is changing a bit here. Starts well and energetic.
Hartcher – can you win? Very hard to build a personality in 9 months. Need a real fighter to beat Howard.
Goes back to “contestable”, falls back to waffly style but hits IR and global warming. What do with losers? No pay back.
Put in process for reform of ALP parliamentary party [true re front bench spill]
KB right from start looks okay, happy, like monkey off his back. Looking smart. And sharp and God strike me, charming.
Good question from Greg Turnbull directing traffic about front bench spill yet 2 weeks ago not.
“contestable” again jarring versus normal English “competitive”. It’s not fucking Oxford Kim, or even WA voters. Clean fight call by KB. No retribution. Focus on the main game. Showing his courage about losing then?
Last show for the year.
[My view there is truth on both sides of the challenge. Echoes question of GT are both right, that neither can win against Howard? Both agree must beat Howard this time for the sake of ‘building the nation’]

7 Riley Diary – 8.35-8.40 am
Talking Rudd and Gilliard, Rudd will come back to 7 Sunrise on Friday mornings. Both challengers been in contact with the show.
Over to Riley tape. Last supper metaphor in Kingston restaurant. Fluffing his lines embarrassing footage. ACT/ACTU stuff up at big MCG rally. All true criticism.
Very funny hot potato ALP wiggles image.
Blooper by Downer, funny laughed at himself. Wacky Kelvin Thompson stupid porn metaphor. Costello – Garrett footage, relevant as his career will go up in ALP stoush.

To defeat evil, we may have to traffic in evils: indefinite detention of suspects, coercive interrogations, targeted assassinations, even pre-emptive war. Former Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said that despite Afghanistan's rising opium production and violence in the south, "the trajectory is a hopeful and promising one"
When Kim Beazley was elected...
...it was like Caucus met on the 19th floor of a tall building. They led him to the window and said,' stick out your arms and soar.' As he dropped past the 18th and 17th they said,' He's gathering speed'. The 16th and 15th, Momentum is building'. And so on to the fifth, ' He's getting it.' The forth, Umm, I wonder?' Now at level one - ' Who'll vounteer as Kims replacement?'
But everyone is staunch.
Rudd said to Beazley, "Kill yrself son" Kim says, "Man, you must be puttin' me on" Rudd say, "No." Kim say, "What?" Rudd say, "You can do what you want Kim, but The next time you see me comin' you better run" Well Kim says, "Where do you want this killin' done?" Rudd says, "Out on Highway 1."
Well Stalinist Sam he had a bloody nose Welfare Department they wouldn't give him no clothes He asked poor Howard where can I go Howard said there's only one place I know Sam said tell me quick man I got to run Ol' Howard just pointed with his gun And said that way down on Highway 1.
Well Macklin the Finger said to Julie the King I got forty red white and blue shoe strings And a thousand telephones that don't ring Do you know where I can get rid of these things And Julie the King said let me think for a minute hon And she said yes I think it can be easily done Just take everything down to Highway 1.
Now the fifth daughter on the twelfth night Told the first father that things weren't right My complexion she said is much too white He said come here and step into the light he says hmm you're right Let me tell the second mother this has been done But the second mother was with the seventh son And they were both out burning donuts on Highway 1

Insiders 2 at 9am (replayed at 11.10 am on Parliamentary News network 630 am in Sydney)
Paul Kelly soliloquy. Rudd and Gilliard (RG) on Seven Sunrise at 8.13 footage. Insiders cannabilses MTP footage on 10 already also, as per my report above.
Kelly outlines task. Narrow win won’t be enough for KB, but this is tendentious News Ltd agenda. Rudd might just let it go for the good of the country? That would be best. KB is actually improving and this is a good practice match v Howard later.
Best result would be Gilliard as deputy leader. Rudd stay Foreign Affairs. KB continue to improve.
Get rid of the ‘dream team’ bullshit tag. That’s a media invention prefacing the character assassination later on. They are such cynical reptiles.
Kelly betrays his biases with speech against Rudd unknown reputation as reverse mirror of 7 Sunrise bias to Ruddy talent on their show.
Rudd fist of AWB, downplays by saying ‘intriguing’, Kelly lies about Govt ‘clean’ bill of health and ‘exonerated’. This is corrupt analysis by Kelly in absence of Hill and Anderson and cruelling of cross examination. What a travesty of Big Media Kelly really has become. A Monolith.
Gilliard footage with slogan ‘new style of leadership’. Talent is Jenny Macklin, as against G. M plays his portfolio experience. True. Argues polling in front. [but this ignores should be streets ahead. But what both ignore is Establishment media cynical control agendas. This is the real damage to our democracy and to the ALP, Greens and others. Dirty Big Media like Kelly above frauding the AWB Cole import. A real vandalism of national intellectual life.] Macklin has the Beazley fluffs in public speaking. A jarring tedious voice. The fluffs, two so far, have been very minor but its not what you expect.
Cassidy indeed goes exactly to this – her situation. Answers humbly in form at least but ignorantly I think as to self reflection. Trustworthy, she says. Totally untrustworthy over tsunami in harness January 2005 when should have done the acting leader job on ALP reaction to the disaster while Latham took time off while sick. That was vicious.
Education policy of Macklin. Neck and neck, Macklin fudges why ALP is not way ahead. She is a fake on this. Dreadful voice jars on. Mind you Gilliard’s voice is not much better. [What a bunch of unappealing characters they are.] Very amusing question about Joel Fitzgibbon, Latham’s big mate. Cassidy disciplines failure to answer.
Blather about clean fight, clear the air, front bench reshuffle due to destabilizing of last week – clear admission no actual reformist principle re factions but rather opportunistic defence.
Every person segement – arty freelancer – an RG core demographic in Melbourne but really quite useless in terms of swinging voter? Always would have voted ALP, so no relevance about main event election 2007. Dis enchanted alp voters won’t change the election result.
Panel: Jim Middleton abc, won’t predict, suggests close result.
Glen Milne resurrection on panel. That’s a big favour amongst media mates. Milne speaks calmly and rationally justifying his spot – stay off the sauce. It’s a demon. Move on Glen et al! Well no. Milne indulges “hate eachother” and to top it off “poisonous” which are words reprising ….his own situation.
Middleton doesn’t go with Milne. Milne sows seeds of Rudd one trick pony but running Goss premiers office is a broad experience.
Agree with Misha Schubert (nee ?) that a win is a win, and party would be mad to not lock in behind who. Are qualities of both leaders. Middleton doesn’t think it matters. Howard fortified winner and spooks ALP both. Rudd Qld appeal questioned by Middleton source. Numbers up in the air.
Milne article discussed. Something about Rudd bad temper? Inevitable joke about fiery tempers. Risk risk risk smear on Rudd?
[his article advertised on their website this morning as “Opinions: Milne, Price and Akerman” at http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/editorials but what do you know, its deleted from the link. No Milne yet it’s in the paper?
[His pathetic mea culpa for drunken violence is on page 2, and defamatory, with Mayne’s ‘specialty being unsubstantiated innuendo and smear’. Well well. That from a News Ltd hack. Objectively Mayne’s specialty is actually deconstructing corporate financial relations as per his AGM crusades with a sideline of cross over of Big Business to Big Politics. And then he goes for the gossip and trivia. Actually Maybe has been maturing as a journalist and media figure for quite a while now and for such as Penberthy to attack him as a presenter at the ‘Wankleys’ inhouse awards, the man who concocted a story against John Brogden, and then his independent replacement in NSW Parliament is surreal.
It is also a cheap sledge of the ABC and Trioli indirectly who have taken Mayne on. These are big media power games played out as personal aggression. Bring on the deconstruction of the big media, even by a grasper like Eric Beecher/Di Gribble team]
Milne two articles at p85 are blather, and likely News Ltd unreliable...for instance Rudd and Gilliard look charmingly vulnerable these last day or two, like they will be eaten alive by Howard. No I fear it would be a bad mistake to change now. And see extraordinary comments by Milne below.
Abbott gets on talking pictures: Howard’s ultra right man. “A lot of dirty water under the bridge.” What a freudian slip that is – read MTP piece above again.
This hand to hand battle over Milne alcohol PROBLEM. Milne asked why his trantrum at the Walkley’s. He says Mayne put a link to a blog site claiming he was a sexual predator and had attacked his wife (?) in print (?) in some way. Cassidy quickly cut in to avoid defamatory legal exposure: No the link was by crikey not Mayne and he is contributor not owner for 18 months. Milne counters with everyone knows 1. Mayne is alter ego of Crikey like public face, founder, still contributes and 2. how he publishes falsehoods calling in journalistic peers at the forum. Trouble is they didn’t agree with Milnes tantrum. Trouble is Mayne may well have standards higher than any News Ltd hack for getting out of the corrupt organization. Trouble is Milne is in a corrupt organization.
In short Milne has blown his apology PR and his credibility. He said it was because of medication synergy with alcohol, now he admits actually there was also an axe to grind. Do you think his wife might be able to speak for herself if she had been defamed by crikey or Mayne?
The man has lost it and as a son and grandson of hopeless alcoholics I can see the signs but Milne can’t. Like his alcohol related fatness.

As often happens (a bit too often), contrary to the above entry re Insiders in Part 2 of the post, I skipped the front page of the Sydney Sunday Telegraph and thus missed Milne's main lead, page 1 over to page 4 'Rudd leads ugly fight/Beazley camp: rival has explosive temper'.
This is a classic 'feed the Coalition monster' front page banner headline by making the ALP look testosterone driven and thus a turn off for women voters: Also reflected in the posters on the streets at newsagents today for Sunday Telegraph here in Sydney.
The newsagents, who we presume mostly vote Coalition dutifully put it out on the road to hurt the non Howard vote. ......
Yes, I do notice SIMC is up too with this slightly different web address ...
http://sydney.indymedia.org/
That is no www, and no au at the end. It's org all the way.
Thanks for letting me publish here MIM. I appreciate it. I may not be back for quite some time unless it's seriously worthwhile.
