The role of community broadcasting in Australia continues to expand. The McNair Community Radio National Listener Survey recently revealed that the numbers of community radio listeners has risen in Australia to 47% of the monthly radio listeners aged 15 and above (released 25 August, 2006).
As a radio station committed to issues and communities marginalized by the mainstream media, 3CR fulfills the roles most appreciated by community radio listeners - specialist music and information programs, unique programming and local news and music. Currently 400 volunteers broadcast 135 programs in 26 languages each week making 3CR the most diverse radio station in Melbourne.
“In a climate where mainstream media organisations are reducing locally produced content, 3CR has greater importance than ever and needs to be accessible beyond Melbourne”, says Juliet Fox, 3CR Programming Coordinator.
3CR’s current affairs programs are presented by grassroots activists whose unique access and insights on campaigns and issues attract both local and international interest. Gabrielle Reade, co-producer of Earth Matters says, “Earth Matters is Australia’s only national environment program and webstreaming will greatly facilitate listeners around Australia tuning in and participating”.
Bilbo Taylor, co presenter of 3CR’s Radioactive Show believes that, “Webstreaming provides true independent media. The last few years has seen a rise in community based media outlets and now activist radio stations such as 3CR are joining web-based media so that listeners are getting greater access to listening and participation”.
With webstreaming 3CR’s 25 community language program presenters will now be able to communicate directly to their communities in their countries of origin and generally audiences will be able to listen to 3CR with perfect sound quality.
