$299 can buy many things such as allot of beer, aeroplane tickets, couple weeks rent, a nice push bike or about an oz of hydro. Or it could buy you 1 copy of MS Windows XP (or 1/2 a copy of MS Office)

ubuntu logoJune 1 2006 saw the official release of the latest instalment of the Linux based Ubuntu 6.06 Operating system, an easy and free drop-in replacement for 95% of Windows users.  Included in the standard Ubuntu system is Open Office an extremely powerful MS Office replacement with may features such as PDF support.  Firefox takes the place of MS Internet Explorer, with added security, and stability along with many extensions (such as adblock) and countless themes ranging from the beautiful to the hilarious.

Managing Ubuntu and installing new programmes is extremely basic thanks to the package management system.  As well as downloading programmes from around the Internet, Ubuntu gives you the option of installing 10000+ pretested and packaged free programmes with just a couple of mouse clicks (From the main "Applications" menu select "Add/Remove").  Ubuntu will also check for updated and let you know when they are available, just click to update.

Ubuntu features very modest hardware requirements and unlike MS Window can breathe life in to older or second hand computers (including Apple Mac's).  If you run in to trouble there is a wealth of resources at you finger tips ranging from friendly forums and easy to follow documentation through to commercial grade tech support.

Ubuntu music player - AmaroLinux if free open source effort that is the backbone of the Internet today (Including every indymedia).  It has, is and always will be free, no need to buy a new licence, no need to buy a new computer to get the next upgrade.  Open source software throws the perpetual upgrade cycle out with Windows, replacing it with ease and freedom.

Give it a shot, with the money you save you can buy more Productive things :)
