LAKE COWAL CORROBOREE AT EASTER Friday 14 - Monday 17 April 2006
"We have no resources but we are taking the fight for all the peoples because of the prospect of cyanide poisoning."
Neville 'Chappy' Williams, Traditional Owner of Lake Cowal UK Independent, October 2005 Come out to the Lake and support Wiradjuri Traditional Owners with their continuing fight to protect Lake Cowal from the hands of gold giant Barrick Gold. The theme is RAIN so come and listen to this sacred land and bring on the rain to stop this 'Midas' greed. The mine starts operating on 27 March 2006 so this is yet another significant year for the campaign as cyanide will be transported through communities from Gladstone, Queensland to Lake Cowal, NSW. The NSW government refuse to release the cyanide transportation route even with pressure from the Greens: http://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/prod/parlment/hansart.nsf/V3Key/LC20060308028 Wiradjuri Traditional Elder Neville 'Chappy' Williams with the ongoing support of the Indigenous Justice Advocacy Network continue to fight Barrick in the courts. barrick is currently the largest gold producer in the world.
Despite the pending court cases regarding the legitimacy of the gold mine and opposition from Tradtional Owners, and environmental and human rights groups the NSW state government is sitting back and allowing further desecration of a significant cultural and ecological site.
