Today (March 12th) the Aboriginal Tent Embassy (A.T.E) started a Sacred Fire Ceremony in Melbourne to coincide with the Stolenwealth (Commonwealth) Games.

Last weekend Isabel Coe combined ashes from a continual link of Fire Ceremonies all around the country with the ashes at the A.T.E. in Canberra (see photos) which were then transported to Melbourne during the week by Robert Corowa.
Due to concern that the authorities might try to stop the flame from being lit in Melbourne, the transportation of the ashes for the Sacred Fire was kept quiet. Yesterday a location was decided by representatives of the A.T.E. in consultation with representatives of the Yorta Yorta Nation and Robbie Thorpe of the Gunai Nation at a Fire Ceremony at Barmah Forest, Victoria.
The Aboriginal Sacred Fire for Peace and Justice was lit today with the travelling ashes at Kings Domain, St Kilda Rd, Melbourne. The Fire’s location is just down from Flinders Street Station next to the Sidney Myer Music Bowl.
The Victorian Police visited the site and have given the okay. The Sacred Fire will continue until the closing ceremony of the Stolenwealth (Commonwealth) Games on March 26th. Fire Ceremonies will be taking place each day. Bands, music and partying will take place according to Robert Corowa. Robert said, “ALL ARE WELCOME!” Camping space is available so take your tents. There is a no drugs, no alcohol and no violence policy. According to Robert there are already 2-300 people at the site.

The round the sacred fire gathering from midday 12/03/2006 Kings Domain near Governor's Mansion & Myer Music Bowl. A great experience to be there seeing history being made. Photograph in memory of recently deceased Koori woman community activist from Portland Western Victoria. She and all the previous generations live on in our hearts - to see a new day of social justice for the indigenous people of this land.

Stay peaceful, get bigger, gather more support.
If you are removed, return later in larger numbers. Sing.
