Howard's 10 year party gatecrashed : Melbourne Indymedia

Unionists and members of the local Melbourne community chanted the arriving Prime Minister and other politicians in attendance about the lack of access Australians have to the political process in Australia. John Howard's white ambassadorial Sedan headed a convoy that was egged and surrounded before entering the Myer Family's estate. A tarpaulin was laid on the road in-front of the entrance which read "Raise funds for the needy, not the greedy" and "Howard: unforgivable, lies".

The media watched on as a congregating crowd shared pizza and engaged in a game of cricket, as a parody of John Howard's bowling attempts in mid 2005 in a game with troops deployed overseas. A couple of people arrived suited up in black after messages had been circulating asking people to attend the counter-party in formal attire.

Police cordoned off a path leading up as guests arrived at which point most people left. One police officer was targeted and heckled by protestors and the media as he was not wearing identification after being involved in man-handling one middle-aged man away from the scene.

No injuries occurred and no arrests were made.

Protestors had their say.

No one was hurt. No one was arrested. No one's property was damaged.

Peaceful protest, peacefully ignored by the masses.

Then the leafy suburbs return to normal, oblivious to the minor interruption.

Ah. The majesty of democracy when used as it should be.

And not a drum or unwashed dreadlocked tosser to be seen.

For the second day in a row, workers and young people have protested at functions celebrating John Howard’s 10th anniversary in office. In Sydney on Thursday night hundreds of demonstrators marched on the main entrance of the Westin Hotel where guests had gathered to hear Howard speak. On Friday night in the exclusive Melbourne suburb of Toorak about 150 protesters gathered outside a mansion where a $10,000 per head dinner was organised for Howard and the big business elite.

The Melbourne protest was rowdy with people chanting slogans against the war in Iraq, for the rights of refugees and in particular against Howard’s new IR legislation. The demonstration was covered by all of the major media outlets and several Socialist Party members were interviewed throughout the day. SP National Organiser Anthony Main was featured heavily on several outlets getting many points across about Howard’s attacks on workers and young people.

The Victoria Police were out in force with police officers almost outnumbering protesters. In a break with tradition the specially trained Force Response Unit did not oversee the operation, and in fact the local Prahran Police station looked after the event. Despite extra police being brought in from Moorabbin, Mordialloc and Caulfield they were still unable to control the situation. Protesters broke the police line on several occasions to get up close and personal with Howard as his chauffer driven car was escorted into the premises.

Some minor scuffles broke out between police and protesters, including one incident where a police officer repeatedly kicked a young person. This was caught on film by one of the demonstrators and SP members were scathing in the media after this event. Both in the lead up to the event and on the night the police were extremely uncooperative. They were not only provocative towards the protest but on many occasions refused to negotiate with the protesters.

Unfortunately unlike the protest in Sydney on Thursday no official trade union contingents were present on the demonstration. Apart from the Socialist Party and other socialist groups, individual rank and file unionists and a handful of anarchists attended the demonstration. The fact that the union movement has not chosen to officially get involved in these demonstrations is a shame as Howard’s IR laws are the biggest ever attack the unions have seen. Not only do we need to protest Howard whenever he is attending functions like the ones we have seen this week, but we need to organise a mass movement that will not only defeat the IR laws but Howard himself.

After a week of reading bullshit mainstream articles lauding the "great" ten years of office of this lying, racist government, I was starting to think I was taking crazy pills and maybe few others shared my views on this government. Thats why this demonstration was so heartwarming - to see a group of spirited citizens taking it to the rich and powerful and stating another point of view. It had to be done - so thanks to those who made it to this demo for brightening up my week.
The photos of the $10,000 a head rent a crowd having to deal with some "rabble" out the front was also great.

Hey the Plunder Party - Australian Inc franchise - run by Manager Howard has ten years of profiteering and cruelty celebration and most folks just ignore it take their Soma, lover Big (well he is smallish) Brother, collaborate by paying taxes on their fuel, GST etc.

I, like many others, am emphatically disappointed that John Howard got to celebrate his tenth year in office, particularly as he was able to fund his series of Australia wide, private and exclusive soirées on us- the tax payer.

And as a very compassionate and fair, but apprehensive and infuriated, person, and because of his continuous lies, backstabbing, and puritanical political decisions and agendas, I too am very outspoken in my opinions and concerns regarding his lack of a heart and a soul. As most people do, I want to protest against him in an effort to crush his powerful hold on our lives here in Australia, as well as the lives of other human beings in many other countries that are suffering because of his influence and bonds with greedy, cheating global corporations. And as much as I think that he is the epitome of a piece of cockroach faeces, I still don't think that we protesters and activists should lower ourselves to his contemptible, inadequate, pitiful, and deceitful level, by yelling abuse and profanities at him, especially when there are commercial news cameras around.

I was a part of the Friday the third protest in Toorak at 62 Clendon Rd, a monstrosity of a house and land owned by Ted Baillieu. Mr Baillieu, 52, has extraordinary wealth. A member of the Baillieu-Myer dynasty, he is easily Victoria's richest politician. His parliamentary declaration of pecuniary interests lists shares in more than 30 companies, including Coles Myer, the big banks, BHP Billiton, and as Ted Balliieu is an admirer of John Howard. "I think one of the features of the Howard Government is that John Howard has maintained his composure and his lack of pretension throughout. He's maintained his dignity and humility, and I think that's important". This is where Howard dined with some of Australia's most wealthy, gluttonous and shallow people, at a reported ten thousand dollars a plate.
And although the number of protesters didn't even reach eighty (which was very disappointing in itself), what the commercial news channels reported to Australia was a very disturbing, highly exaggerated and misleading picture- what they consider to be the beauty of “creative” editing.

It is well known that since Johnny has been in power, no political, environmental or peace rallies or protests have even been acknowledged by him and his senate, let alone succeeded, and so the question becomes: why do we continue to protest in this way? Why haven't we thought of another, much smarter and more effective way of protesting against him?

Even though it is Johnny we hate, despise and loathe with all of our hearts, minds, and souls, he is not the one that votes himself in to power. It is us. It is small town Australia. It is middle aged, conservative Australia. It is my parents. It is your grandparents. It is our brothers and sisters. It is anyone that ONLY has access to the commercial news stations, who distort the truth as much as they can to keep the ratings high, finances flowing and friendships with Johnny and his egomaniacal mates. It is anyone that lives in regional isolation, or in the country, who do not have access to the internet, to the presentations and information, that is so readily available to the city dwellers, and many might find that it is hard to believe in this day and age, but I can assure you of the lack. And it is these people that we have to reach. It is these people that make up an extremely high percentage of the voting population, and it is these people that need to know the truth, in order to see him for what he really is, and to inspire them, to change their voting habits.

So I vote that we protesters rethink our strategies, and calmly and intelligently, spread the information out as far as possible, so we can have a positive influence on his supporters, rather than them just seeing through us, and regarding us as dole bludging ferals (believe me, this is how country folk see us; as a former country girl myself, I'm qualified to judge).

Let's not wallow in the disease of little Johnny's case of small man's syndrome, let us rise above it, and really start protesting with our brains rather than our brawn and useless profanities and abuse.

Where is the official union movement now that they are needed ?
The Howard government’s WorkChoices Seminars are being held in all major cities, yet as the first three in Newcastle this week, N’castle Trades Hall Council, Unions NSW & the ACTU were again conspicuous
by their absence.

I attended the first one, & after an hour on Newspeak I said this felt like Orwell’s 1984, because WorkChoices mean no-choice. I called on all
present – including the government staff running the seminar – to join me in walking out as a protest.

Sitting through the seminar, as the presenter (Big Brother) acknowledged that the ‘WorkChoices Glossary’ are ‘new words’, one felt Orwell’s contrast between thoughtcrime & orthodoxy.

At the next 2 seminars I handed out a leaflet, using Green Left Weekly’s headline “France shows the way”, updated to ‘& now also the Solomons !’.

The leaflet begins with words from the Anarchist Age Weekly Review: “LESSONS OF HISTORY: The difference between French & Australian
workers is that Australian workers, seduced by the idea that you can achieve justice by working up the right channels – eg, the Boeing workers union ? - now find themselves in the ignominious position of being 21st century corporate slaves.

French workers, students & the unemployed have not forgotten the
lessons of history.” It ends with words from Alison Dellit’s GLW review of V for Vendetta: “(we need) active resistance… in defiance of those (like our union leaders ?) who argue that we must be restrained
