Kerry Packer DIS-memorial
Protests planned for tax-payer funded memorial
Media Release
A protest will be held at the state funded memorial service for Kerry Packer at the Sydney Opera House on Friday 17 March from 11am.

“Howard’s decision to sponsor a state funded memorial for Kerry Packer – a man who proudly boasted about his ability to evade paying tax and who spent his life playing polo while others worked to create his fortune – has outraged many who will make their voices heard,” said protest organiser Simon Cunich.

“Howard is hosting million dollar memorials for dead bosses while workers suffer under his Work Choices laws aimed at enriching the likes of Kerry Packer. I’m happy when parasites like Packer drop dead” said protest organiser Louise O’Shea.

When: 11 am, Friday 17 February

Where: Sydney Opera House

Intrigue pervades Packer's send-off

• By Andrew Hornery
February 15, 2006
IT IS the lunch which has become the talk of Sydney's elite, with one particularly vexing question: who has made it onto the guest list and who has not?
Even in death, Kerry Packer has managed to create an air of intrigue, envy and anxiety as VIPs compare invitations to Friday's memorial service at the Opera House. Two invitations have been issued: one to attend the service and another, more exclusive one - to join the Packer clan at a luncheon afterwards in the nearby fine-dining restaurant Guillaume.
One name not expected to attend either event is Channel Seven's chief executive, David Leckie, a former employee and close Packer ally who is engaged in a bitter ratings battle with Packer's beloved Channel Nine.
When asked by the Herald on Monday if he would be there, Mr Leckie initially asked, "What's on?" He quickly added that he would not be attending, declining an explanation. But Mr Leckie made it clear he had a lot of affection for the Packer family.
Other names expected at the service include Russell Crowe, who will deliver a eulogy prepared by the Packer family; Tom Cruise and his pregnant fiancee, Katie Holmes; a former Ascham principal, Rowena Danziger; Alan Jones (who will be MC); Harry M. Miller; Pacific Publishing boss Nick Chan; John and Caroline Laws; Lucy and Malcolm Turnbull; and Packer's sister-in-law, Kate Packer. Ten year 12 students from Mr Packer's alma mater, Geelong Grammar, have been invited. Mr Packer attended the school for four years, finishing in 1956.
Before that, he boarded at Cranbrook, which is also expected to send up to 100 students to the service.
Channel Nine will air a documentary on Mr Packer tomorrow night in prime time. His widow, Ros, has already seen the program and was reportedly "moved".
