Forty people gathered for a solidarity bbq in the carpark of the Fitzroy Postal Sorting Office cnr Gore and Argle Streets from 1pm today, Wednesday February 1st 2006. The crowd was half unionists and half local residents from Atherton Gardens (Public Housing) Residents Association. All had come to support Peter Vining, the Australia Post CEPU delegate so he would not be transferred away by Management.
Peter had previously been dismissed for allegedly upsetting a customer. Solidarity of his job shop's fellow workers, the Union and wider solidarity got Peter reinstated after a Board of Reference hearing. Postal Management came out and photographed those attending with one monitoring us for the whole 90 minutes Speakers included local unionists, members of the Residents Association, Union Solidarity and Yarra Councillor Steve Jolly
The open harassment of Peter and legal threats against the CEPU continue to violate human rights.
A further solidarity event will be held this Friday February 3rd from 9.30 am outside Federal Court of Australia, 305 William Street, Melbourne.
