An SMS message urging people to attend a nonviolent protest against racist violence is circulating widely in Melbourne. A version - which some people have reported receiving up to six times - reads:
"Can this text spread as well as the race riot ones did? Nonviolent protest against racist attacks Fri 16th 5pm Bourke St Mall. Spread this like wildfire."
The protest promoted in the SMS co-incides with an event - "Xmas in Guantanamo Bay" - organised by Civil Rights Defence prior to the recent outbreak of violence in Sydney.
The SMS campaign has sparked mainstream media interest. The Age referred to the counter-SMS campaign today alongside reports of racist messages, as did callers to ABC talkback radio.
Similar SMS messages promoting an anti-racist protest at King George Square this Friday at 5pm have also begun to circulate.
