The men and women, mostly dressed in fluorescent yellow and orange tops and vests, blocked the motorway near Homebush Bay Drive.

NSW Transport Workers Union secretary Tony Sheldon today asked the workers, "Are we ready to fight?" to which they chanted in unison, "Yes!".

As they moved closer to the M4 the protesters began chanting: "Johnny Howard is his name, sweat shop on wheels is his game." More than 15 freight trucks then blocked traffic in both directions on the M4.

Seven trucks stopped traffic at the entrance to the M4 from the Homebush Bay overpass.

About 100m to the west, a further eight trucks blocked traffic travelling west on the motorway.

Protesters sat or stood on the road, many chanting and waving placards with the words "Howard's bill kills" and "Jobs with justice".

The trucks then moved off, freeing traffic in both directions on the M4.

Protesters also moved off the roadway to allow traffic through, waving and cheering as the trucks passed by.
