The 151st anniversary of the formation of the Ballarat Reform League, the 87th anniversary of Armistice Day 1918, the 30th anniverary of the dismissal of the Whitlam Labor Government in 1975 also featured in a survey of history of the day by Dr Joe Toscano of the Anarchist Media Institute, which organised the event. Those present joined in a re-affirmation of the Eureka Oath - which was proudly displayed on one of several magnificent banners erected outside the Gaol - and observed the traditional minute's silence. The call also went out to join in 'reclaiming the radical spirit of the Eureka Rebellion' in Ballarat on the weekend of 3-4 December, including a "Sedition Sunday" organised by People for Civil Liberties and Peacebus.com in Eureka Park, Ballarat, from 11am on Sunday 4 Dec. 6 Reforms Demanded
by Reclaim the Radical Spirit of Eureka.
Friday November 11, 2005 at 07:27 PM
Outside the Old Melbourne Gaol, at 11am on 11th November 2005, those people present unanimously affirmed by vote of hands:
In the tradition of the Ballarat Reform League - formed on November 11th 1854. "We swear by the Southern Cross to stand truly by each other and fight to defend our rights and liberties."
We suggest these reforms be demanded:
1. Howard the bully will desist from attacking workers and the most vulnerable in our community.
2. Complete withdrawal of the IR Laws.
3. Demand automatic and immediate recall of parliamentarians who break their promises (as set out in the constitution of Direct Democracy Not Parliamentary Rule).
4. Demand an inclusion of a Bill of Rights into the Australian Constitution.
5. Troops out of Iraq. Demand an end to militarisation and imperialist aggression.
6. Demand a Treaty with the indigenous people as set out in their black GST campaign. It is a national and international disgrace to be the only country which doesn't have such a treaty.
These demands for radical reform if achieved would change the Australian landscape. We will get some of them eventually if there is enough push from below. We must fight and keep fighting.
