Murder charge against former NT prison officers fail
by Bushy Friday June 17, 2005 at 05:36 PM

The legal action against the former Darwin prison warders whom Letty Scott believed were responsible for the death of her late husband, Douglas has failed.

Murder charge agains...

Justice David Angel dismissed the case saying he was unable to reach a conclusion on the evidence presented.

Two former prison officers were standing trial. Letty had accused that the two men as well as two colleagues (one who had subsequently died and one that couldn't be located) were conspirators in the murder of her husband twenty years ago. She brought forward the claim that the wardens assaulted her husband which brought about his death then hanged him to give the appearance of a suicide.

Douglas Scott was 26 years old and the father of a young son when he was incarcerated in Darwin's Berrimah prison for 60 days, awaiting remand on a charge of indecent language.

In her pursuit of justice in this case Letty Scott has presented evidence from oversea's pathologists working from coronial photographs which they believe prove that her husband did not take his own life.
Mr Scott's body was also exhumed and an inconclusive autopsy was carried out.

In his dismissal of the case Justice Angel stated that he had received an abusive email from Letty Scott which had also been forwarded to the Northern Territory Government soliciter. Angel would not reveal the content of the email.

Letty Scott, understandably upset and frustrated has pledged to keep fighting for justice for her late husband. On the eve of the NT election Letty challenged the judge to jail her over the vituperative email to raise the profile of her plight and her pursuit of justice for Douglas.
