by pc Thursday April 28, 2005 at 08:51 PM

Proceedings began as usual with speeches at the State Library, with Martin Kingham pledging support and reminding students that their fight is a common struggle with the trades unions - he called for large student turnout in support of the planned union rally on 30th June.
A noisy march led by amazingly energetic cheerleaders went down Swanston St, along Bourke St to Parliament House, where a small group in blue t-shirts wre stationed behind police lines... The afternoon ended with a concert and food in the Treasury Gardens, with Rod Quantock regaling the crowd by cutting Brendan Nelson down to size...

Let freedom (not the union cash register) ring!
by Clive Jones Monday May 02, 2005 at 07:59 PM

Remember, all, you will still be allowed to be members of the student union.

You will still be allowed to participate in events organised by the union.

You will still be allowed to pay your union fees.

Nothing is prohibited in these proposals.

It's all about less regulation. Fewer restrictions. Less about telling young people what they have to spend their money on.

It's about FREEDOM to choose whether to support the union or not.

Because the union is like any other organisation. You should not have to pay to join it if you disagree politically with it.

It's not compulsory to go to the football every week. But thousands do because they regard it as value for their hard-earned money. If they consider union services to be worth it, they'll pay for it.

If they regard them as irrelevant to their life at university, they won't.
