February 12, 2005 -- The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that notorious child pornographer Arie Scher has been flagged as the replacement for Amir Laty, the
former Israeli consul to Australia who was expelled amid extreme secrecy from Australia about a month ago.

The government has refused to explain why Laty, who was only 18 months into his posting, was forced to leave under the threat of deportation. It is believed, and
has been widely reported, that Laty's expulsion was related to espionage, as well as personal "indiscretions."

When the Department of Foreign Affairs was asked for an explanation on why Laty was banished, they suggested asking ASIO, Australia's domestic spy agency. That
the agency was involved confirmed speculation the expulsion was related to national security. Eventually, official sources told the Herald espionage was part of thereason Laty was kicked out. Reports subsequently emerged that Laty might have tried to penetrate "highly sensitive Australian intelligence."

In addition, reports of Laty's indiscretions or "out of hours
activities," as one official put it, have also emerged. A number of women have complained of his unwanted attentions and persistent phone calls. The women had thought at the time his behavior might have just come down to cultural difference -- but they were unnerved nevertheless. Then a report emerged yesterday that Laty had a relationship in Canberra with a woman who worked for the Defense Department.

Arie Scher's choice as Laty's replacement has already sparked outrage. According to dozens of reports, including one in the Israeli newspaper Ma'ariv, Scher abandoned
his posting at the Israeli embassy in Brazil five years ago after being implicated in child pornography and before police were able to question him.

Scher, who was the Israeli vice-consul in Rio, and at one point the consul-general, was charged with running an illegal child pornography and prostitution business.
The investigation began when an underage girl testified that she was filmed and photographed by Hebrew language teacher George Schteinberg having sex with Israeli tourists. She also told police that Scher participated in the sessions. In a search of Schteinberg's residence, photographs of children posed on a car with diplomatic
plates were discovered, as well as "massive quantities" of child pornography. Police then traced the car in the pictures back to the Israeli Embassy in Rio de Janeiro.

A search of Scher's apartment confirmed that photographs found at Schteinberg's residence had been taken in the vice-consul's luxury penthouse. "We confirmed that
the pornographic pictures were taken next to the consul's pool and on his deck," said Roberto Costa, a chief investigator for the civil police. "We are going to

After Brazilian authorities notified the Israeli embassy of plans to revoke Scher's diplomatic immunity, he fled. According to the Brazilian federal police, Scher
departed at 12:57 in the morning for Israel by way of Buenos Aries, Argentina.

Agent Icaro Silva of the Brazilian Police Commission (Copacabana) said that Scher is considered a fugitive wanted for creating child pornography. His escape resulted in
a request to Interpol that Scher be arrested if he ever leaves Israel and that the Brazilian government be notified of any developments in this case.

Prior to Scher's flight, Mr. Schteinberg confirmed that he had assisted in taking nude photographs in the consul's apartment, and that he had sexual relations
with a girl, age 11, who was living with him at the time of his arrest. Agent Silva said the pre-teen had been living with Schteinberg for almost a year, "as had been

Silva told reporters that nine complete pornographic Web sites were found on the hard drive of Schteinberg's computer, and all were in Hebrew, the language
that Schteinberg taught. "We want to determine the names of the other girls who appear in those photos," said the commission agent. He added that the Web sites confirm that Schteinberg was running an Internet service that brought Israeli tourists to Brazil to have sex with the children.

Silva also connected Scher to another notorious child pornographer, a retired professor by the name of Ablio Nogueira de Faria, age 78, who was in jail for
producing child pornography. A document titled "An Investigation of Arie Scher," written by an unnamed American, was found in the retiree's home which
contained descriptions of criminal acts by Scher. "We want to know if some connection between the cases exists, therefore Nogueira will be interrogated again," Silva told
reporters.

Israel and Brazil do not have an extradition treaty but the Brazilian Government asked the Israeli Government to return Scher. Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Relations
delivered a formal request to Israel's Foreign Ministry stating that Rio de Janeiro's 31st criminal precinct had a criminal case pending against him.

The request was sent to Brazil's embassy in Tel Aviv on October 2001 and later forwarded to the Israeli Foreign Ministry. Ma'ariv reported that Israel refused to
extradite Scher and instead conducted its own investigation. They found that Scher had merely "behaved inappropriately for a diplomat." And banned him from
foreign diplomatic missions for five years.

A spokesman for the Israeli Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem, Mark Regev, confirmed the disciplinary hearing upon Scher's return from Brazil five years ago. "He
was a young and single man at the time. Now he is married and he's six years older and there is
no reason why he shouldn't make an excellent diplomatic appointment in Australia," Regev told the Herald on Friday.

Other Israeli sources told the Sydney Morning Herald that because of the public nature of the allegations, the Scher inquiry was quietly held at the highest level of the country's Civil Service Commission. They determined that "while some of his behavior was unbecoming, there was nothing close to criminal." "He made a mistake when he was younger but there is no reason why he should not go on to have a very strong career as a diplomat," Regev said.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry assured the Herald that Scher's appointment was "just pending" and he had not left for Australia. "The decision to send him to
Australia stands but because of concerns that were raised, the case is being looked at at the highest levels of the ministry," Regev said.

The story *is* true and details have been confirmed by Gov, Police and press in the affected countries prior to posting it here. It is also fact that the Aus Gov is considering bringing this guy here - ask them!

Having checked up myself, can confirm that this 'diplomat' Aryeh Sche remains on the 'wanted fugitive list' in Brazil.

There are different Jewish worldviews regarding "choseness."

1. Jews are superior beings to non-Jews.

2. Jews are not superior to non-Jews just because they are Jews. It comes down to behaviour and ethical action.

Israeli Consul Assistant involved with prostitution of minors escapes from Brazil

Civil and Federal police are investigating the involvement of Consul Assistant of Israel in Rio de Janeiro, Arie Scher, in an international minors prostitution network. The police got to the consul after searching the house owned by 40-year old school teacher Georges Schteinberg, where police found 154 photos of naked teenagers and 12 VCR tapes. Schteinberg was arrested in a special cell for prisoners with university degrees.

Both men were accused by 17-year old R.R., who called the police after seeing pictures of herself naked in the Internet. She said that she worked for the schoolteacher as a secretary and earned R$ 200 a month. The girl also revealed that she used to go to Scher's house with her friends, where they took off their clothes and were photographed. According to the teenager, Scher also liked the company of boys and had an intimate relationship with Schteinberg, as shone by a photograph in which they appear naked together. In Scher's house, the police found 21 pornographic pictures of girls, five VCR and two DVD tapes.

The principal of A Liessin school, a traditional Israeli school in Rio de Janeiro where Schteinberg used to teach, released a note to the press informing that they had never had any information whatsoever about discrediting behavior regarding the teacher. Students said to be astonished because the teacher "seemed to be a very serious, nice and police person." Schteinberg will be indicted for corruption and exploitation of minors and may be convicted for 4 to 10 years in prison for the first crime and 1 to 4 years in jail for the second, depending on the charges.

On Thursday, July 6th, the police of Rio de Janeiro revealed that the case was closed because the Consul Assistant left the country and is, therefore, considered an outlaw fugitive. Scher embarked to Argentina and from there took a plane to Israel. Some news wires informed that he had testified late last week in Israel. Now, the case is in the hands of the consul's home country, which may even decide to deport Scher and force him to testify in Brazil. According to the Brazilian police, samples of evidence will still be examined.

However Foreign Ministry officials said Scher has been en route to Israel for the past two days.

Scher, who was at one point consul-general in Rio, was declared a fugitive by Brazilian authorities after a search of his apartment on Tuesday yielded what police officials described as evidence it was used for the manufacture of pornographic material, some of them involving underage girls.

A Foreign Ministry spokesman declined to comment on whether the Brazilian police had been informed of Scher's whereabouts, but said that general-consul Eitan Sorkin would meet with Brazilian foreign ministry officials yesterday afternoon.

Brazilian authorities notified the Israeli embassy of plans to revoke Scher's diplomatic immunity on Tuesday, prior to the search. Ministry probes diplomat in Brazilian sex scandal

The Foreign Ministry yesterday began its questioning of its vice-consul to Brazil Aryeh Scher, accused by Brazilian authorities of involvement in producing and distributing child pornography. Scher flew back to Israel before he could be arrested in Brazil. Foreign Ministry spokesman Akiva Tor explained that yesterday's questioning was the "first step" in an inquiry of undetermined but brief duration. He said that Scher was not removed from Brazil in evasion of a police warrant, but because of the negative attention he was attracting. Tor added that the Foreign Ministry has not received a warrant from Brazilian authorities and that Scher is not currently under arrest. Israeli general-consul Eitan Sorkin met with Brazilian foreign ministry officials on Wednesday and assured them that Scher had been returned to Israel for a "clarification" of allegations, and that the Israeli government intended to cooperate with Brazilian authorities. The Brazilian daily Oglobo said that Brazilian judge Siro Darlan ruled that Scher be returned to Brazil. Brazilian authorities have said they have no doubt that Scher was involved in illegal activities, and stated that he will be jailed if he is returned. Professor of Hebrew Georges Schteinberg, who was charged with sexually exploiting minors, led Brazilian authorities to Scher. The two men allegedly claimed that the girls appearing in nude photographs in their possession were their girlfriends, and had consented to sexual relations with them. According to Oglobo, Jewish Congregation of Brazil president Rabbi Nilton Bonder decried Scher's departure from Brazil, and said that Schteinberg and Scher should not be considered representatives of the Jewish community there.

Wanted Israeli diplomat flees Brazil

Police in Rio de Janeiro say an Israeli diplomat suspected of belonging to an international child pornography ring has fled Brazil and returned to Israel.

The Israeli diplomatic mission confirmed that its vice-consul, Arie Scher, had flown home at the request of the Israeli government, which it said had ordered an investigation into the allegations.

Police want to question him in connection with pornographic pictures and videotapes of young children found in the home of a Hebrew language teacher arrested on Tuesday.

The children were pictured and filmed at the diplomat's house.

Police said the pictures had been published on the internet with the apparent aim of attracting foreign paedophiles to Rio de Janeiro.

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - Brazilian police suspect an Israeli diplomat of hosting child prostitution sessions after finding pictures of nude teen-age girls taken at his apartment, police said Wednesday.

Police began a hunt for Israel's administration consul to Rio de Janeiro, Arie Scher, Tuesday and the Israeli government said it was recalling the middle-ranking diplomat to investigate whether he was innocent or guilty.

Following a young girl's testimony, police arrested a Hebrew teacher at his home early Tuesday where they found pictures of nude girls taken in the diplomat's apartment. In other photos, where everybody was fully dressed, Scher appeared embracing the same girls.

"We confirmed that the pornographic pictures were taken next to the consul's pool and on his deck," said Roberto Costa, a chief investigator for the civil police. "We are going to charge him with exploiting minors and prostituting them."

Police believe Scher is hiding out in the Israeli Consulate in Rio.

Foreign Minister David Levy told Israel's Army Radio, "I don't know if he is guilty, if he is innocent. The first thing is we need to bring him home and an investigation has to be conducted."

The Israeli Embassy in Brasilia said it would not comment on the case until it had further details.

Police said a young girl testified that she was filmed and photographed by the teacher, Georges Schteinberg, having sex with Israeli tourists. She also claimed that Scher participated in some of the sessions, without explaining what his role was.

In Schteinberg's home, police said they found 12 videos, Internet messages and 154 pictures, including the shots of naked girls in Scher's apartment.

Rio de Janeiro has the highest rate of child prostitution in Brazil. Workers at hotels and restaurants along world-famous Copacabana beach often offer to provide clients with teenage prostitutes.
