The President Versus David Hicks

“When we took on this film project we were going to follow the legal proceedings around the arrest of David Hicks”, filmmaker Curtis Levy told the Sydney opening night of The President Versus David Hicks. “After several months, it became clear that wouldn’t be possible — there weren’t going to be any legal proceedings.”

The President Versus David Hicks traces the journey of David Hicks’ father Terry Hicks, as he searches for answers as to why his son is being held without charge and without legal rights or representation in a small cage at the Guantanamo Bay US naval base.

David’s story is told through his letters home. Having been affected by watching Muslims being killed in Kosova, he travelled and joined the Kosova Liberation Army. Hicks travelled continued to Pakistan, Kashmir and on to Afghanistan, as his interest in Islam grew.

Terry Hicks traces his son’s footsteps across the world, using David’s letters as a guide. But Terry Hicks’ journey is also a struggle for justice and truth.

“These people [Guantanamo detainees] are terrorists, killers. They only know a country when its weak and they want to occupy it like a parasite”, US President George Bush proclaimed.

But legal experts, human rights organisations, and many others disagree with Bush’s claims. “Once you have a situation where people can’t go to a court to test why they’re being held, you have the beginnings of a police state”, an attorney states, while the extent of undemocratic practices — allowing evidence obtained through torture, military-appointed lawyers and judges, and more — are revealed.

The President Versus David Hicks is thoroughly honest and compelling. Terry Hicks has never been a political activist — he is simply a loving father seeking justice in adversity. He was so determined to see some justice that he traveled to New York, erected a cage identical in size to that imprisoning his son in Guantanamo, and stood for hours in the cage on a busy street, to draw attention to his son’s plight.

David Hicks emerges a very real, complex person. Terry doesn’t ask for his son to be freed unconditionally — but that he be charged if he has committed a crime, and given the right to defend himself. Under particular fire is the Australian government’s dismal unwillingness to push that its citizens be returned, which even London has done.

On the night the film opened in Sydney, Hicks’ fellow Australian incarcerated in Guantanamo Bay, Mamdouh Habib, was telling his wife of the sleep deprivation and torture he was experiencing — until the call was cut off. Habib begged his wife not to send any more family photos — Habib’s lawyer later explaining that they are used in “interrogation”.

At the Sydney opening, Terry Hicks stressed that his primary concern is the release of all incarcerated in Guantanamo — not just Hicks and Habib, but also the over 500 others. Fellow filmmaker Bentley Dean announced, to cheers, that Terry Hicks had been nominated for father of the year. If unassuming humanity and the quest for justice are taken into account, he should be a sure thing.

Googling Green Left Weekly

As the Green Left Weekly website continues to be the number 1 political website in Australia, we're discovering its prominence on the search engine Google.

A friend of one of our Canberra GLW distributors wanted to catch up with the latest gossip from Survivor by checking out Who Weekly magazine on the web. So they did a Google search for “who weekly australia”, and was surprised to find GLW first and second on the resulting list.

So we tried a few other combinations: “left australia” came up number one and two, with “weekly green” GLW was at number five, for “left”, we were at number eight.

Of course, searching for green left weekly (or any combination of the three words) gets about 98 of the first 100, either our site, links to us by friendly sites, translations, and the occasional right wing attack. Google returns a total of 1.6 million results, many of which would be relevant to us. “Green Left Weekly” in quotes returns 45,500 pages, while 55,700 pages contain greenleft.org.au.

Entering “Green Left Weekly” Hitwise returns the sites that carried the report by web-ranking company Hitwise about the GLW website's popularity. We were ranked the second most popular political web site for Australians after Michael Moore's site. Wondering what link there might be between Michael Moore and Australia, we entered “michael moore australia” and sure enough, the first three sites listed are for GLW.

On a hunch, and looking forward to the elections, we tried “throw howard out” and up popped GLW for the first three pages! Wondering how good Google really was we tried “end the lies”, and again, the first two sites were GLW. We tried “troops out now!”, and yet again, GLW had the top two listings. Smart searching!

You make a lot of big claimes in your latest post. So I just remind you that last week you wrote a long article where you lumped in the global justice movement with Al Qaida and Columbian and Mexican drug cartels.

The point of quoting that was to show that the article was NOT one sided and Terrys dad CAN see the problems with his son.

However as far as the "Talliban fighters" in Guantanamo... Various factions of the Mujahadeen and associated warloards would take over villiages in Afghanistan. Each time they cam into a place they would rape and loot, then execute whoever was "with the other side". So naturally most people who wanted to survive would claim to be with Talliban or Northern Alliance whenever they showed up just in order to survive. Many of the Afghanis in Guantanamo were caught up in the fighting this way. Many are NOT actually "programmed" Mujahadeen at all but just unfortunate people who were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I posted a fairly civil response to you pr - %%%% is someone else. Given that half the responses to my posts lately have included insults, threats of sexual violence, long discussions about arse-fucking or paranoia-spreading accusations lately or just trolls just stealing my name I would rather change names regularly now. And don't bitch that I don't post positive responses to your posts anymore because after you decided to post my real name you specifically explained that you do not want my solidarity. But don't expect me not to have opinions. I did not get involved in this stuff to help... It is purely for reasons of self interest that I am involved in the movement - I want things to change.
