WALHI - Friends of the Earth Indonesia are will mount a legal challenge against Newcrest Mining for their activities in Toguraci, Indonesia. A vigil will be held on Wednesday 28 April at 8:30 am outside the offices of Newcrest, 600 St Kilda Rd, Melbourne.

On 28 April at 8:30am a vigil will be held at the offices of Newcrest Australia, 600 St Kilda Rd Melbourne.

The Indonesian Human Rights Commission, KOMNAS HAM, is investigating alleged human rights violations by Brimob acting as Newcrest’s security force at the Newcrest mine. Meanwhile, WALHI - Friends of the Earth Indonesia has announced it is preparing legal action against Newcrest’s breach of environmental laws at the Toguraci mine.

Newcrest is the Melbourne based mining company operating in North Maluku, Indonesia. On 7 January 2004 one person was shot dead and hundreds were arrested and beaten by Brimob, the paramilitary group, employed to do security for the mine at Halmahera.

Since January, there have been on-going issues of detention of local people. The communities of Kao and Malifut want Newcrest out. This vigil will highlight the ongoing problems of human rights violations alleged by the communities, and will aim to exert pressure on Newcrest to leave.
