About a dozen supporters picketed the Melbourne Magistrates Court this morning in support of
anti-war activist Reta Kaur, who is charged with causing criminal damage of $9000 to the US consulate in St Kilda Road by painting anti-war slogans on the wall.

From a media release issued by the Moreland Peace Group, of which Reta is a member:

Anti-war campaigners will gather outside the Melbourne Magistrates Court this morning

(Thursday, March 11) in a show of support for peace activist Reta Kaur.

Reta Kaur, founder of Women for Peace: No Weapons, No War and a member of the Moreland Peace

Group, is facing a court appearance over allegations that she caused $9000 damage to

property outside the US consulate in St Kilda Rd.

"This is a blatant attempt to punish and intimidate the peace movement," said Moreland Peace

Group spokesperson David Glanz.

"Paint washes off, but a child killed by a Cruise missile is dead forever.

"Reta Kaur opposed an illegal war based on lies — while John Howard applauded 'shock and

awe' tactics that killed thousands of Iraqis.

"The charges against Reta Kaur should be dropped. Howard is the real criminal," Glanz added.
