Melbourne Indymedia software
by curious Wednesday March 03, 2004 at 08:28 PM

The new Melb software doesnt seem to reveal a public list of hidden articles.

The new Melb software doesnt seem to reveal a list of articles, and whether they are hidden or not, publicly -- this is "required"[1] of the imc's software..
ie this site shows via the 'admin' link whether articles are hidden or not... and URLs can be constructed and shared around , whether or not articles are hidden. Melb doesnt seem to do this either...

why not ...?

Comments are not Articles
by Monty Miller Wednesday March 03, 2004 at 11:02 PM

There is a hidden articles link on the Melbourne front page which shows all the articles hidden.

When comments are hidden it is harder for users to find, but they are still available!

Fairly simple. Comments are not articles, which is why they do not show up in the hidden articles list.

I'll leave it to the trolls to figure out how to read hidden comments! It took me 5 minutes to work out myself. Mind you, with checking out some of the threads with hidden comments, so far I agree with the way MIMC have applied editorial policy.

Good work Indykids!

Bad faith policy
by pr Wednesday March 03, 2004 at 11:33 PM

To take five minutes to find a hidden comment or thread means this IMC is operating in bad faith because this has come up before and could have been fixed by now.
As further evidence of bad faith I offer the evidence of exclusion without reason for an applicant to the collective and the inconsistant application of the posting rules as seen by their continued flouting by Greg Skables.
While none of these in itself might condemn an IMC as a fraud and a leech on the public, taken collectively I believe they warrant pre emptive action for regime change and the present clique of dictators have been given 48 hours to leave the country.

Hidden comments...
by Monty Miller Wednesday March 03, 2004 at 11:45 PM

No, Pr, it took me 5 minutes to discover how to read hidden comments in any thread. As simple as changing the address in the address bar. Once you learn how to do it, you can do it quickly for any thread.

Personally, I think it much simpler than going through all the admin options on Sydney Indymedia to read their hidden comments.

Suggestion

If you don't like the software write your own one, or make a suggestion to the current one: SF-Active.

Greg Skables...mostly spam
by Monty Miller Wednesday March 03, 2004 at 11:58 PM

In terms of Greg Skables, I have noticed some of his recent posts going to the crosspost wire. Maybe this is MIMC applying the editorial guidelines? I hope so. His posts I have found annoying in their lack of relevancy to Victoria. I don't mind the odd one, but every day he seems to spam not only Melbourne, but most IMCs in Australia. Most of his content has relevancy for NSW, and he should be using Sydney IMC rather than spamming the network.

Wake up Greg, if you read this. By spamming the network and sending local NSW material continually to Melbourne and elsewhere you turn people off from reading any report of yours, including any of more than local importance.

Thankyou curious - you've provided us with a "flame thread"
by Indy Volunteer Thursday March 04, 2004 at 01:38 AM

For those interested in learning about the shenanigans which we've been dealing with, I direct you to http://melbourne.indymedia.org/news/2003/10/55419_comment.php
http://melbourne.indymedia.org/news/2004/02/62356_comment.php
and http://melbourne.indymedia.org/news/2004/02/63379_comment.php

Sorry, no more energy left to play with trolls - they have no currency with us and their posts can be removed at our leisure. Until the "flamewire" idea is discussed by the collective, the "flame thread" idea is the best compromise.
Leon, spinifex, etc. should feel free to post their rants here.

Thanks again, curious.

OK,
so there is a "hidden articles" link on the front page! I was wrong, didnt see it - thanks for clearing that up.

As Monty points out, the comments are treated differently, which is silly. People should _not_ have to "discover" how to do it - there should be a direct URL for people to see hidden comments.

Brian_fear - Hey fuck you too ! You sound like an elitist wanker.
I have written plenty of software for the free software community.
We arent just waiting for wankers like you to provide us with software , from which you are free from responsibilities ... like providing an open and transparent editorial environment.

If you a posing as an IMC then you need to provide open software - like finding hiddent comments, _without_ needing to be a geek and hunt for the URLs which do it.

Who's Elitist?

curious: a simple suggestion is anything but elitism, the hidden posts link is found on the main page.

Hiding comments foolish
by pr Thursday March 04, 2004 at 09:43 PM

Everyone accepts that some articles have to be hidden but why affectively censor COMMENTS?

That's what I don't understand as a link could be provided should any need to be hidden for some reason - so where's that link?

Tampering with the comments makes the secretive and closed clique of MIM wide open to charges of violating the principles of open publishing AND possibly it makes them liable for any criminal or defamatory comments.

The present law does not hold an open BBS responsible for the comments posted however it could easily be argued that as a MODERATED BBS then EVERYTHING posted here is liable to prosecution. MIM might be better off and safer with open slather on comments or adding an extra filter or two at most.

This present situation here with a closed secretive clique and opaque policy is not healthy and not in line with open publishing imo.

It'll end in tears.

MIM needs an ombudspersyn
by pr Saturday March 06, 2004 at 10:52 AM

If MIM want to mantain the pretensions that it it's going to be some lasting ' alternative' and ' independent' media then, like many media outlets os it needs to pull it's socks up on complaints procedure inc. a possible formal open complaints procedure with an Ombuspersyn and best practise open source justice process.

( just my 2c)
