Britney Spears defends George Bush

If this singing thing doesn't work out for Britney Spears, she can always become a talking head on politically minded cable news shows. She's already building up some experience in that department, having appeared Wednesday on CNN's ''Crossfire,'' where cohost Tucker Carlson grilled her on such issues of the day as the conflict in Iraq and that notorious kiss she shared with Madonna on last week's MTV Video Music Awards.

Spears defended President Bush's handling of the war in Iraq. ''Honestly, I think we should just trust our president in every decision he makes and should just support that, you know, and be faithful in what happens,'' said the gum-chewing singer. Asked if she trusted the president, she said: ''Yes, I do.''

Spears, who said she watches CNN ''all the time,'' also defended her liplock with Madonna as a near-spontaneous experiment. ''In rehearsals it wasn't something like, 'This is what we're going to do.' It was kind of like, we play around a little bit, and she said before the performance, 'Let's just feel it out and see what happens,''' she said. ''I didn't know it was going to be that long and everything, but it was cool.'' She said she'd never kissed a woman before and wouldn't do so again, unless ''maybe with Madonna.'' She insisted that, offstage, her life is no seamier now than in her Mousketeer days. ''I think I'm still clean living,'' she said. ''I mean I don't go home and have orgies or anything like that.''
