Tampa Rally

People remembered the humanity of Arne Rinan, the captain of the Norwegian container ship Tampa, who rescued over 400 refugees two years ago and precipitated a a crisis in Refugee policy.

About 800 people attended the refugee rally to comemorate the Tampa Crisis two years ago, in 2001.
Liam Ward, of the Refugee Action Collective, told the ABC:
"We've already had a number of people deported from some of the detention centres, the people who were originally put on the temporary protection visas in the lead up to the Tampa incident," he said.
"Their temporary protection visas are now expiring and they're likely to face deportation as well, so obviously there's a campaign mounting to try and stop those deportations and its just as important as ever to have a lively public display of opposition to Government policy."
Some music was performed, some speeches containing heartbraking stories about refugees, and some street theatre - a reenactment of the Tampa Crisis, complete with a mockup of the Tampa, SAS troops, and the sharks smelling some political blood - one with Ruddock's face, one looking like Peter Reith and one looking like John Howard.
The rally also had cyclists gathering for the last Friday of the month critical mass.
